The Dead Tree

Last week our HOA informed us that we had to remove a dead tree from our front yard. I thought it was so odd, because I didn't notice that the tree had died. Wouldn't I notice that something I see everyday was dead? Wouldn't I see that the life had gone out of it, and just decaying wood remained? I looked at the tree that day, and it looked pretty stark, but I also saw healthy, green buds. I suppressed the uneasy feeling I had, and we proceeded to look for an arborist who could replace the tree.

When I coach clients, I am just that - the coach. Sure, I am a subject matter expert on some topics, but the reality is that you know yourself and your situation better than I could ever. You know what is best for you, and my role is to help clients hear and listen to the highest form of themselves. I help people identify and clear out negative self talk, catabolic energy, and thought patterns that don't serve them. Once we clear these thoughts circling around us, we can hear the thoughts and patterns within us. These are the ones that speak to us from a place of truth with no hidden agendas.

The irony in this story about the tree is that I had a feeling of unease about the tree, because I didn't think it was dead. The Home Owners Association did, but I didn't question it. Instead, I questioned myself.

When the tree company came out and told us that the tree was not dead, I felt relieved, but I was also internally embarrassed that I allowed the HOA to alter my beliefs. Although, I know little about trees, I do know that I clearly saw leaves in the week before the notice came.  I looked up the tree type and see that it is typical for the leaves to fall off ahead of the cooler weather. The lesson I learned confirms the fact that I can't let someone or something change what I know is true, even if at that moment, I didn't have the science to know it.

I know what is true for me. I hope you all have that assurance as well. Don't allow someone to tell you what is or what is not true for you. Just like I knew that tree in my yard, you know yourself better than anyone else. Sometimes, it just takes a support system, like a coach, to help you clear the noise to see what insights are actually coming from you.
